Butter
Whether you’re going for a toasted sandwich or just prefer your sandwich bread buttered, you can’t go wrong with Naturli Vegan Block. This vegan butter is solid and performs just like dairy butter.
Cream Cheese
No bagel is complete without cream cheese! Violife makes a super tasty vegan cream cheese and they have a huge range of flavours (hot pepper, tzatziki, cheddar and onion . . .).
The Sainsburys own brand vegan cream cheese is also very close to the real thing.
Mayo
- Follow Your Heart – Vegenaise
Follow Your Heart is a trailblazing vegan brand. Their vegenaise is one of the original vegan mayos and is still one of the best. They also recently released an Aioli and a sriracha vegenaise!
- Hellman’s Vegan Mayo
OMGosh this tastes just like the regular Hellman’s mayo! It will take you right back to your Omni sandwich days!
- Homemade
Fancy learning how to make vegan mayo of your own? It’s easier than you think and costs a fraction of the price when compared with a store-bought mayo! Try our recipe for vegan mayo three ways.
Pesto
Fear not you don’t have to break out the food processor every time you want pesto. Vegan pesto is a great way to pack your sandwiches with flavour and if you’re not a basil fan try a red pepper or sundried tomato pesto.
Hummus
No vegan meal is quite complete without hummus. In most supermarkets, you are spoilt for choice with brands and flavours of hummus. The best ones have a high percentage of chickpeas in the ingredients (70% and above) and are made with more tahini than oil (i.e. tahini should be higher on the ingredients list than oil).
If you need hummus in a pinch, try making it at home. The BB recipe for caramelised onion hummus can elevate any sandwich and is easily adaptable to make a plain version.

Cheese
There are countless options when it comes to vegan cheese but not all brands are created equal. A vegan cheese that is stand-alone delicious AND melts on demand is essential for a good sandwich.
- Vegan Greek Block
This vegan feta by Violife is good enough to eat on its own and would be perfect in a roasted veg sandwich with lashing of pesto.
- Sheese Mature Cheddar
This is the best vegan cheese for melting.
For toasted cheese sandwiches, grate it and sprinkle a small handful into a hot frying pan. Place your bread over the cheese, fill with more cheese and toast until golden brown and crisp.
- Follow Your Heart
Try their cheese slices in various flavours.
- Violife
Also worth trying the Violife cheese slices which come in a handful of flavours and are great for a classic ‘Cheese and Ham’ sandbo.
Deli Slices
There’s nothing like a deli slice to take a vegan sandwich to new heights.
- Quorn Pepperoni Slices
- Quorn Smoky Ham Free Slices
- Chicken Free Slices
Not all of Quorn’s products are vegan (they use a lot of eggs and dairy!) but these three deli slices are vegan AND gluten-free! Praise be! - Tofurkey deli slices
These are also worth a mention but unfortunately, they are NOT gluten-free.
Pickles and Kraut
A sandwich doesn’t feel complete without some sort of pickle. Whether you prefer the classic gherkin or love loading your sandwich with sauerkraut, a pickle does an excellent job of adding a touch of acid to balance out all those rich flavours.
Sauerkraut is having its moment in the sun and you should be able to find it in the fridge section of any supermarket. For homemade try this red sauerkraut or this turmeric and carrot sauerkraut.
While there’s no reason your pickles and ferments shouldn’t be gluten-free and vegan watch out for kimchi which can be made with fish sauce and soy sauce. Our kimchi recipe is vegan and GF!
